Developing talent from the City of Buffalo’s most underserved communities to meet the growing needs for green infrastructure maintenance.

Blue and Green Infrastructure Stewardship Program

Heart of the City Neighborhoods is currently working with PowerCorpsPHL, The Service Collaborative of WNY, Inc., and the Buffalo Sewer Authority (BSA) to implement Phase 1 of a Blue and Green Infrastructure Stewardship Program.

Under Phase 1, HOCN and our partners will work to recruit and train unemployed or underemployed young people who are facing barriers to employment to engage in a fellowship program to prepare them for employment in BSA’s Green Infrastructure Maintenance Program. Training Buffalo’s future workforce is crucial to the city’s long-term prosperity, and jobs related to water remain an opportunity. In particular, Buffalo needs a skilled workforce to design, build, and maintain both blue (water) and green (nature, plazas and parks) infrastructure to protect against flooding and other effects of climate change.

Addressing the interconnections of modern urban challenges like public health, flood management, housing delivery, biodiversity decline, and climate change requires a much more dynamic and integrated approach to designing our cities. HOCN hopes that by imploring the Green and Blue Infrastructure, as described above, can provide multiple ecosystem services that improve our cities.
