The Good Neighborhood

Though I have good and exciting reasons to not be in Buffalo today, I’m still bummed to have to miss tonight’s Spring Mixer hosted by Green Options Buffalo, Heart of the City Neighborhoods, and Journey’s End Refugee Services tonight at the Eights Bistro (888 Main St., 5:30-7:30p.m.).
They’ve billed it as a “chance to learn more about affordable housing opportunities, refugee services, and community-friendly transportation options” all in one place, but it’s surely more than that – spend a few minutes among these folks learning of the many ways they’re working for the greater good in Buffalo and you’ll be inspired beyond the scope of their specific work. These are the people in our neighborhoods who put people first, and they’re a joy to work with and just be around.
Funny enough, part of my dream last night was spent riding my bike down Delaware and catching up to empress of the Eights Amelia Schineller and her lesser half, Newell Nussbaumer, also on their bikes – I don’t recall any refugees, other than the sea lions we fed at the zoo at one pit stop…
The Good Neighborhood is almost ready to announce our plans for Heart of the City’s 2nd annual Kickball Tourney – meantime, enjoy the mile-wide smile and contagious spirit of HOCN Executive Director Stephanie Simeon tonight at the Eights, and ask her how much she enjoyed watching The Good Hood’s glorious championship victory in the inaugural tourney last year!
